Control the contents of an analytical essay with a concise thesis statement that declares the argument you are defending in your paper.
Integrate one outside source and one class reading to support that thesis.

MLA format for citations. You will need a Works Cited page.
Your analysis should be detailed and persuasive.
Your paper should be clear, logical, and well organized.

AssignmentFor centuries, various cultures have used masks as a way to express individual and group identity. In some cultures, masks play an important role in rituals, and in others they are used as symbols of war or independence. Masks also represent the person behind it: what they are trying to reveal, and what they may be veiling/obscuring. Write a three-page, double-spaced analytical essay about a mask from a film, story, or another culture. Incorporate at least one outside source and one reading from the class to support your analysis (this can be any of the readings we’ve looked at so far); a Works Cited page is required for this paper. You should also include a visual representation of your mask at the top of your paper, just below the title.
StructureIntro: Describe your mask’s appearance and any feelings/emotions it evokes.
Thesis: What does the mask reveal, and what might it be concealing? Does its physical appearance betray or support its symbolic meaning? Think about our class discussion on exterior vs. interior.
Body: Research the history, origin, and function of the mask. Use one of Freud’s theories we’ve discussed in class (personality theory, repression, the unconscious, the uncanny, etc.) to further analyze the mask. What might it symbolize in psychoanalytic terms? ­­­­­ Also consider how masks are universal and used in many different cultures around the world: How does your mask fit into a particular cultural context?
Conclusion: Contemplate the mask’s significance/role and tie back to your thesis. ­­
