Essay #1: The Future of Technology
For this first unit you read an essay from The Atlantic titled “The End of the Silicon Valley Myth” by Brian Merchant (LINK). In this article the author focuses on the promises, and failures of our biggest technology companies, like Meta, Google, etc., to come up with the next big thing that will change the world. However, so far, according to the author, this has not happened.
Your Job: 5-6 total paragraphs (including intro and conclusion); double spaced
Write an essay in which you answer the below question:
Considering the author’s point of view in the article that the major technology companies seem to be struggling with coming up with ideas that will push technology forward, how do you anticipate technology shaping our society in the upcoming decade? How do you perceive our attitudes toward technology evolving, and in what ways will these changes impact the way we engage with technology and with each other?
Keys for success:
Your essay must be organized, beginning with an intro (this is covered in the following module pages) that has a hook, background on the reading (1-2 sentence summary), and a thesis statement (this is covered in the following module pages) that expresses your opinion to the above question.
Your essay needs to have organized body paragraphs. You need to use the PIE strategy (this will be this week’s module).
Your essay needs to end with a conclusion (this will be this week’s module).
Your essay must be composed primarily of your own opinions, only using the reading to either back up your argument, or to argue against. I do NOT want just an explanation or summary of the article, nor do I want just a long description of the issue. You need to have an argument.
Each body paragraph must have at least one direct quote from the article that supports the argument/point you are making in your topic sentence (This will be this week’s module).
Please do not use any other outside sources for this essay. Stick to just responding to our reading. You will have an opportunity to do a research paper at the end of the semester.
Cite all quotes using MLA formatting.
Note: Canvas automatically scans for plagiarism. If you are caught using an essay from the internet, or another/previous class or college (yes, Canvas scans for that too), you will automatically fail this essay with a grade of 0.
Due Dates:
First draft is due by Wednesday, April 19 @ 11:59pm on Canvas (Submit the first 1.5 pages of your essay; double spaced (2.0); typed; 12 pt. font). Please upload Word or PDF documents only.
