Using the critical reading skills practiced in class, you will be writing an analytical essay. In order to analyze a text effectively, you will need to engage in close reading, or reading “between the lines.” This means that you will be choosing representative passages and carefully deconstructing them, highlighting meanings that may not be immediately obvious to fellow readers in order to support your overall interpretation of the text (the thesis statement).
The idea is to reach a deep understanding of the text by examining the writer’s narrative elements (i.e., characters, diction, style, theme, and tone), everything that went into writing the piece. Whatever work you choose, you should first read it carefully (usually more than once) and arrive at your own understanding of what you read (as we have done weekly within our discussion board assignments.) The next step is to see what others have said about it (that’s the research part) and compare your findings with theirs.
Your paper must include the following:
An introduction that provides relevant background information and ends with your thesis statement
A minimum of four body paragraphs, each of which addresses a particular subtopic that relates to your thesis statement
A minimum of three references from reliable, academic sources, all of which are cited at least once in the paper. You should use at least one peer-reviewed source from the library databases.
A conclusion that reaffirms your thesis statement and addresses wider implications
Formatting, citations, and references must all adhere to APA style
IN REF TO MY FIRST DRAFT
Your paper’s Full Title must appear on Page 1 and at the top of Page 3! ABSTRACT: MISSING! Your abstract must DESCRIBE YOUR PAPER, not the text you interpreted.
Begin your abstract with this phrase: “This paper interprets ….. [insert Title of your text]. ESSAY: OK, but SHORT on content, quotations from the text, and commentaries.
Your introduction must provide CONTEXT: Who? What? When? Why? Do NOT explain the PLOT in the INTRO; that goes in the Content paragraph.
Your thesis must INTERPRET the text in 7-15 words; it should state the MEANING of the text, not be a summary of the text. Your thesis is the SINGLE MOST important sentence in the entire essay. Your thesis is Your Paper in one sentence! Your CONTENT paragraph’s Topic Sentence must explain the PLOT (what happens) of the story in 10-20 words! Explain the what happens, not why! Make sure you have an expert (not just the original text) quoted in each body paragraph.
1 Topic Sentence! 2 Passage from the Text! 3 Your Interpretation! 4 Quote from EXPERT/Commentary! 5 Your Interpretation. 6 Repeat 2-5 within the paragraph as needed.
Add depth to your paper by quoting experts’ commentary on your text AND/OR on the specific criteria (audience, purpose, etc.) you are discussing in that paragraph.
Use these experts to help analyze what/why/how they are saying what they are saying! Paragraphs in an essay should be 1/2 to 4/5 of a page long. The body paragraphs should all be about the same length, although your CONTENT paragraph should be the longest. Your introduction and conclusion should be the shortest paragraphs.
APA: Review your usage of 7th ed. Find a tutorial on YOUTUBE or use the Purdue OWL online.
Do NOT put Quotations in Italics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BOOKS should be in Italics. Articles & Short Stories should be in “Quotation Marks.” In-text CITATIONS: Good Spacing/Fonts: Put a space between quotes and parentheses: quoted word” (Author, Date). REFERENCES: MISSING???????????????????????
Your final draft similarity report must be under 25%. Your Safe Assign is currently at 33%! You should have 15-20 quotes in this paper. It’s a textual analysis meaning your are interpreting the words of the author.
You must quote those words before you interpret them. You can lower this by adding more of your own thoughts to the interpretation.
