Social identity is based on the social construction of different identity categories. For example, society constructs race by dividing people into groups based on skin color, and then culture emerges through intragroup interaction. While social workers strive for cultural competence, the profession recognizes that having a complete knowledge of culture is never achievable. Instead, social workers must strive for cultural humility—the idea that clients are the experts of their culture and that the social worker needs to work from a position of openness to continually learn about culture.
