Culture, Social Interaction and Socialization;
Analyze three commercials or advertisements (on TV, online, billboards, magazines, etc.). Select three
ads that you find interesting sociologically. Write a two page paper (double spaced, 12 pt. font) in
which you respond to the following questions:
1) Provide a brief description of the ad. What product is promoted? Describe how it is promoted.
2) What social groups are represented (gender, class, sexuality, racial, etc.)? How are they
depicted? For example, what is the relationship between gender and the product?
3) Apply at least two sociological concepts to each ad. Does it promote specific cultural values or
norms? Is it a form of cultural imperialism? Does the ad reinforce traditional gender role
socialization? Other social patterns? Explain.
4) Who benefits from this ad? What groups make money from the sale of the product? What
groups are harmed by the ad or the product? How is the product is made, who makes it, who
sells and buys it
