Controversy has erupted over whether some children’s books have a place in schoo

succurely

Controversy has erupted over whether some children’s books have a place in
schools and libraries as they are perceived as exploiting children’s innocence, for
example, by legitimising homosexuality, or undermining some religious and
cultural beliefs. However, whilst controversial, academics have argued that these
books provide opportunities to introduce children to ‘real-life’ experiences, such
as non-normative family units, different religious affiliations and different cultural
beliefs and practices.
You are required to:
– Choose one particular children’s book that deals with a controversial issue. – Provide a picture of the cover of the book and a brief synopsis of the story. – Reflect on the value of your chosen book in light of the above statement, and
critically discuss why it is important for teachers to tackle controversial
issues in the form of literature in the classroom in a multicultural context,
such as the South African classroom.
– Provide practical examples to substantiate your argument.
– Finally, provide examples of the kinds of questions you as teacher could ask
to open up discussion and debate.
