CIVILIZATION; MESOPOTAMIA and EGYPT; BRONZE AGE; ANCIENT CONQUERORS -WESTERN CIVILIZATION BOOK BY JOSHUA COLE 5Th edition Need to do these 5 questions
1. CIVILIZATIONp. 2-9, Introduction through New Economies and Societies
with maps on p. 7 and 13. The Rise of civilization (ch1)
Analysis: Read the selection and then write 2 paragraphs (no quotes needed!), to answer:
Q What are the building blocks of civilization?
− What building blocks of civilization was Catalhoyuk missing that Jericho did have?
Would you classify them both as cities? Describe their locations in the Fertile Crescent
and how each was impacted by the Neolithic Revolution.
2. MESOPOTAMIA
p. 9-21 Urban Development in Mesopotamia through Hammurabi’s Legacy (ch1)
DOC #1: The Code of Hammurabi, p. 22-23 (ch1)
Analysis: Read the selections and then write 2 paragraphs (quotes needed!), to answer:
Q What information does the Code of Hammurabi give us about Babylonian society?
− Look at Babylonian social structure, how women were treated and the privileges of
wealth.
− Both Hammurabi and Sargon were lugals in their societies. What does this mean and
how did their methods of ruling differ?
Be sure you explain the context of the DOC. What is this Code and why is it important?
3. MESOPOTAMIA AND EGYPT COMPARED
p. 9-21 – review (ch1)
p. 21-37 The Development of Civilization in Egypt through the Conclusion (ch1)
p. 44-49 New Kingdom Egypt through The Reign of Akhenaten (ch2)
Five Take-Aways: Cover the following ideas in your 5 entries (remember each entry should be 3 or 4
sentences with facts from the text to back up the ideas you think are most important) You do not have to
write full paragraphs with topic sentences, etc. Just skip to the facts!
Q Who “wore it better” for each category? In other words, decide if you think Egypt or
Mesopotamia utilized their resources and building blocks most efficiently.
1. Flooding an transportation on the Nile vs Tigris/Euphrates
2. the pharoh’s vs lugals
3. the pyramids vs ziggurats
4. hieroglyphics vs cuneiform
5. Egyptian religion (and ma’at) vs Mesopotamian religion
– 7 –
4. EGYPT and BRONZE AGE
p. 44-56 New Kingdome Egypt and The Sea People and the End of the Bronze Age (ch2)
Analysis: Read the selection and then write 2 paragraphs (no quotes needed), to answer:
Q During the late Bronze Age the world’s superpowers began to rely as much on diplomacy as they
did on warfare. What was the benefit of this?
− Do you think Hatshepsut or Akhenaten was better at diplomacy? Before you decide,
describe both rulers and New Kingdom Egypt.
− How well did the other Bronze Age superpowers do with diplomacy? Consider the Hittites,
Babylonians, the Aegean Civilizations of the Minoans and Mycenaean Greece (…and
Assyria but we will talk about them next so you can leave them out of this answer).
5. ANCIENT VIEWS OF CONQUERING
p. 62-70 The Revival of the Assyrian Empire through the Legacy of Zoroastrianism (ch2) and
DOC #1: The Stele of King Esarhaddon at Senjirli, p. 72 and
DOC #2 Inscription Honoring Cyrus, p. 72-73
Analysis: Read the selection and then write 2 paragraphs (quotes needed!), to answer:
Q From Document (1): Who were the Neo-Assyrians? Note that their two fundamental tenets
were waging holy war and the extraction of tribute through terror. How does Document (1)
support these tenets? The Neo-Assyrians were considered henotheists. What does this mean and
how did it impact their warfare? (be sure to have one quote from this document)
Q From Document (2): What was the Persian Empire and who was Cyrus the Great? Then
compare the propaganda used in Document (1) to that which is used in Document (2). If you
aren’t sure what propaganda is, look it up! How does each document use propaganda
differently? What audiences were they addressing and who were they trying to influence? What
function does each inscription serve? (have another quote from document 2)
