Book: The St. Martins Guide to Writing: Shorter Twelfth Edition (by Rise and Charles)
Select a topic from St. Martin’s, p. 192. Practicing the Genre: Debating a position (Part I).
Take a position on one of the topics listed on p. 192. Put in the subject line your topic choice.
For example:
Subject line: Drinking Alcohol Should be Banned from Campuses
Your initial post should consist of two paragraphs.
First paragraph: Express your argument in the first paragraph not less than 5 sentences in length, your point of view regarding the chosen topic. Make sure you choose a particular stance or side of the argument (for or against alcohol on campus, for instance).
Second paragraph: In the following paragraph of at least 5 sentences, offer the opposing viewpoint (counterargument) and your rebuttal that disputes that dissenting point of view.
For example:
Subject: Kindle Versus Books (This topic is NOT in the assigned list in St. Martin’s)
I will write in one paragraph my argument proving that it is more beneficial to read a text from an electronic source such as a Kindle or IPad rather than reading text from a book.
In my second paragraph, I will present the counterargument used by those supporting books over electronic reading resources and I will present the weakness of the opposing viewpoint’s argument through my rebuttal.
***Choose only a topic from p, 192 of St. Martin’s! There are four listed topics; select one of these topics on college paid taxes, general education requirements in college, drinking on campus, or online courses versus face-to-face classes.
