Assignment: Analysis of a Pertinent Healthcare Issue
The Quadruple Aim provides broad categories of goals to pursue to maintain and improve healthcare. Within each goal are many issues that, if addressed successfully, may have a positive impact on outcomes. For example, healthcare leaders are being tasked to shift from an emphasis on disease management often provided in an acute care setting to health promotion and disease prevention delivered in primary care settings. Efforts in this area can have significant positive impacts by reducing the need for primary healthcare and by reducing the stress on the healthcare system.
Changes in the industry only serve to stress what has always been true; namely, that the healthcare field has always faced significant challenges, and that goals to improve healthcare will always involve multiple stakeholders. This should not seem surprising given the circumstances. Indeed, when a growing population needs care, there are factors involved such as the demands of providing that care and the rising costs associated with healthcare. Generally, it is not surprising that the field of healthcare is an industry facing multifaceted issues that evolve over time.
In this module’s Discussion, you reviewed some healthcare issues/stressors and selected one for further review. For this Assignment, you will consider in more detail the healthcare issue/stressor you selected. You will also review research that addresses the issue/stressor and write a white paper to your organization’s leadership that addresses the issue/stressor you selected.
To Prepare:
Review the national healthcare issues/stressors presented in the Resources and reflect on the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected for study.
Reflect on the feedback you received from your colleagues on your Discussion post for the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected.
Identify and review two additional scholarly resources (not included in the Resources for this module) that focus on change strategies implemented by healthcare organizations to address your selected national healthcare issue/stressor.
The Assignment (2-3 Pages):
Analysis of a Pertinent Healthcare Issue
Develop a 2 to 3 page paper, written to your organization’s leadership team, addressing your selected national healthcare issue/stressor and how it is impacting your work setting. Be sure to address the following:
Describe the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected and its impact on your organization. Use organizational data to quantify the impact (if necessary, seek assistance from leadership or appropriate stakeholders in your organization).
Provide a brief summary of the two articles you reviewed from outside resources on the national healthcare issue/stressor. Explain how the healthcare issue/stressor is being addressed in other organizations.
Summarize the strategies used to address the organizational impact of national healthcare issues/stressors presented in the scholarly resources you selected. Explain how they may impact your organization both positively and negatively. Be specific and provide examples.

Patient Overload
Description of Healthcare

For
the last couple of years, the issue/stressor that I have seen, being a bedside
nurse is patient overload. Nurses have been going to travel nurse making a lot more
money. This leaves the staff nurses carrying a patient load of six patients on
a med surg unit making less money. I have seen ICU nurses get transferred to
take up to four patients, the PCU nurses will get floated and have to take on six
patients. When nurses take on this patient load nurses will experience burnout
and job dissatisfaction. This causes some nurses to leave the career path all together
or leave bedside nursing and focus on outpatient settings. For example,
Baltalha et al. (2019) theorized patient safety in health services is currently
discussed and encouraged because it is one of the main components of quality
care. Efforts and management and care strategies for implementation of patient
safety are growing. In this context, health workers are the main actors
responsible for implementing in their professional practice the policies,
procedures, standards, and routines to assist patients with safety and quality.
Nursing workers stand out among this group because they are in great numbers
within the institutions and often provide direct and continuous care to
patients. It is noted that for these workers to act safely they must be in
physical and psychological balance. However, physical and emotional stress
related to the work process may lead these workers to experience situations of
suffering, which may hamper or even prevent their safe performance in the care
provided.1 Burnout syndrome is among the problems that can emerge in the work
context of these professionals. It is characterized as a psychological syndrome
that implies a prolonged response to chronic interpersonal stressors in the
work composed of three dimensions: emotional exhaustion; depersonalization; and
personal accomplishment.
How My Health System Work

My
healthcare facility has not done much about this stressor. Nurses continue to
get up to six patients. Leadership claim they are hiring more staff. I also see
on the website that they are offering bonuses to nurses during the hiring
process. They have decided to go away with the travel nurse contracts, although
they will still have nurses working per diem. Faller (2018) examined the
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2018) found that employer costs, including
paid leave, supplemental pay, insurance, retirement/pension, and legally
required benefits, averaged 35.2% of total compensation for registered nurses
working in private industry hospitals in March 2017. These amounts vary by
geographical location and by the value of benefits packages, and therefore can
be significantly higher. In addition, costs of overtime, premium pay, hire-on
bonuses, and shift bonuses for core staff also should be included when comparing
their full costs to the hourly rate for travel nurses.
