Understanding the components of an IEP is of utmost importance to special education professionals, and it is equally important that special education teachers, support staff, and service providers be able to execute the IEP in the classroom. Employing strategies to ensure that all members of the team are providing the necessary support and working toward mastery of each student’s specified IEP goals is an essential skill for special education teachers.
Allocate at least 1.5 hours in the field to support this field experience.
For this assignment, interview and observe a Grade K-12 classroom for students with moderate to severe disabilities taught by a certified special education teacher. For the interview, discuss the development and execution of the IEP by looking at an IEP for one of the students in the class, if possible, and addressing each of the following during your conversation with your mentor teacher:
The major components of the IEP including the procedural safeguards and how and when these should be reviewed with the parent/guardian.
How assessment information is used to plan individualized, measurable instructional goals for students with moderate to severe disabilities.
Why it is important to involve support team members and service providers such as the school nurse, therapists, medical personnel, and parents/guardians in the IEP process and development of IEP goals.
Strategies for collaborating with parents/guardians of students with moderate to severe disabilities when setting IEP goals and monitoring progress.
How the need for support in multiple areas (medical and educational) affects the content of the IEP and the way that IEP goals are written, communicated, and documented to ensure that the needs of students with moderate to severe disabilities are being met in the educational setting.
The strategies used in the classroom to implement and measure the IEP goals for each student. Include discussion of the collaboration and communication that takes place between the special education teacher, paraprofessionals, support staff, service providers, and parents/guardians to ensure the IEP is being properly executed and documented.
Legal and ethical issues related to executing IEPs for students with moderate to severe disabilities. Explain how the presence of multiple disabilities and the associated medical needs can create greater legal risks and liabilities for the educational institution and those who provide services within the education setting.
Observe the instructional strategies used by the mentor teacher, paraprofessionals, and support staff when working with students. Pay special attention to the following:
Observe whether specific information/data is collected and recorded as well as the procedures used for measuring and recording the information.
Observe the communication and collaboration that takes place between various individuals who are working with each student.
Following the observation, meet again briefly with your mentor teacher to ask clarifying questions related to setting measurable IEP goals, helping students achieve IEP goals, and the strategies, collaboration, and communication you observed.
Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
In 250-500 words, reflect on the following. Remember to use pseudonyms when identifying students in the class.
Summarize what you learned about the communication and collaboration that is necessary to develop an IEP and execute classroom strategies that ensure students with moderate to severe disabilities are working toward and meeting their IEP goals. Provide specific examples from your interview and observation to support your ideas.
Discuss 2-3 unique legal and/or ethical challenges special education teachers face when implementing IEPs for students with moderate to severe disabilities. Include specific examples as part of your discussion.
APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
