ASSESSMENT CRITERIA FOR PAPERS
THE SUCCESSFUL PAPER WILL MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
*Students will choose a topic or topics from course material and textbook readings.
* It will begin with a short introductory paragraph that outlines the main points and introduces the
student’s ideas about them.
* It will contain several paragraphs of main text that supports the above, in accordance with assigned length and/or time constraints.
* It will conclude with a short paragraph that sums up the arguments and reviews the evidence presented in the foregoing.
*It will be at least 12 type written content pages.
*It will include several textual references in support of chosen topic.
* It will include a thoughtful analysis/synthesis of the issues involved with the topic(s) discussed and how they relate to course themes. The significance or importance of the topic(s)
should also be addressed.
* It will be written legibly in standard English with correct spelling, grammar, and syntax and will flow
evenly from one point to the next.
* It will be thorough, yet succinct and concise in style. Wordiness, repetition and the use of “filler”
material makes for a weaker result.
*It will follow appropriate MLA or APA format.
*It will not include question.
* It will not use phrases like “I believe”, “In my opinion”, etc.
Notes:
A) The objective of these criteria is to encourage student learning. This process involves developing
critical thinking and effective written communication skills, rather than mere rote memorization
of historical facts.
B) Students who are unsure of their writing abilities are encouraged to improve their skills by seeking
extra help from the professor or from other available academic support networks on campus.
