In this term paper, the main objective is to critically evaluate an “alternative” food system initiative (topic choices listed below). The basis of evaluation will be the broad food sovereignty vision. Students will do additional research to familiarise themselves with their chosen initiative, how it works, which “problem” it addresses and what it sets out to do, and what it achieves. Students will also reflect on the food sovereignty project as a whole and their initiatives contribution to it.
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
Choose one of the following “alternative” food system initiatives:
Urban agriculture
In your paper, you must:
▪ Describe of the selected initiative. Your description must include the main actors involved, the initiative’s objectives, and the main mechanism through which the initiative aims to achieve its objective (e.g. ethical consumption, land occupations, skill- sharing, etc.)
▪ Analyse the problem that the initiative seeks to address (e.g. malnutrition, farmer incomes, cultural loss, environmental degradation, etc.). Your analysis must include a discussion of the aspects of the global food system that contribute to this problem (e.g. the WTO-governed trade system, corporate market power, the simple reproduction squeeze, etc.)
▪ Evaluate how the initiative’s contribution to the food sovereignty project. What aspects of food sovereignty does the initiative advance? Does it do so effectively? What aspects of food sovereignty does it not address? Why not?
▪ Reflect on what complimentary measures, initiatives, or projects could be taken to further the food sovereignty vision; on whether food sovereignty is feasible or even desirable.
To help further your thinking on these questions, consider reading the following:
▪ Bernstein, Henry. 2014 “Food Sovereignty via the ‘Peasant Way’: A Sceptical View.” Journal of Peasant Studies 41(6): 1031–63.
▪ McMichael, Philip. 2015. “A Comment on Henry Bernstein’s Way with Peasants, and Food Sovereignty.” Journal of Peasant Studies 42(1): 193–204.
As always:
▪ Submit assignment on Quercus as one single file (pdf, docx, and odt accepted).
▪ Include bibliography.
