Part I:
What did slaves and “hirelings” have in common and how did both “fit” into the popular understanding of artisan/farmer republicanism of the early 19th century (approximately 1800-1830)?
How did the early artisan/farmer republicans try to resolve the issue of “wage work” and what role did race and slavery play in the process?
Part II:
One could argue that the Great Upheaval was really just a dispute over wage cuts in the middle of a depression but some would say that the wage cuts were really just the breaking point and that a larger issue was on the minds of workers who spontaneously shut down the railroads across the country in 1877. So what might that larger issue have been and what did it portend for the rest of the late 19th century?
