According to the Association for Public Art,(https://www.associationforpublicart.org/what-is-public-art/) “public art is not an art “form.” Its size can be huge or small. It can tower fifty feet high or call attention to the paving beneath your feet. Its shape can be abstract or realistic (or both), and it may be cast, carved, built, assembled, or painted. It can be site-specific or stand in contrast to its surroundings. What distinguishes public art is the unique association of how it is made, where it is, and what it means. Public art can express community values, enhance our environment, transform a landscape, heighten our awareness, or question our assumptions. Placed in public sites, this art is there for everyone, a form of collective community expression. Public art is a reflection of how we see the world – the artist’s response to our time and place combined with our own sense of who we are.”
The following instructions are based on what is ideal. If you are impacted by of COVID in any manner, it is acceptable to write about a work of art that you have encountered in the past or to find a public work online (less ideal but acceptable under present circumstances). If possible, please choose a work of public art that you have encountered in the community where you live, work or go to school. You may also choose to write about artworks that are installed in public spaces on your college campus. An important component of this assignment is to experience and engage with the work in its environment.
In a 600 word typed 12 pt font double-spaced essay, describe the work and write an analysis considering the following questions:
What does it mean to place a work of art in a public space?
Who is the artist?
What is the medium?
Does the title, form or material indicate a subject matter?
Does the public artwork blend into the environment it is situated in or does it stand out?
Is the subject matter of the artwork related to the environment in which it exists?
Is the subject related to the political, or cultural climate? If yes, how so?
Explain why you chose to write about this particular artwork.
