A proposal is a type of argument that introduces a problem or issue and attempts to convince the reader that the idea is worthy of consideration. It also provides some potential solutions that could effectively solve the problem. Effective proposals, therefore, present problems and solutions to help readers gain a better understanding of an issue and why it matters– something we’ve been working on all semester.
Though proposals have varying structures and goals, all have several things in common. They involve evidence, research, and reasoning– and it is a common genre in the workplace as well as in academics. However, as you might know, it’s also becoming increasingly popular for cities and towns as well– often they provide the budget or other types of proposals for school systems, individual budgets, organizations, etc. Therefore, it’s a good idea to learn how to compose an effective one.
For our class, you’ll be composing a proposal on a problem you have noticed. This can be a problem at RVC, your workplace, the state or nation, or anywhere. It could be as simple as re-defining a term, convincing someone to do something (or stop doing something), or involve a more complex set of behaviors. In any case, the issue should not be one that’s found on the list I’ll provide below– we already know, for instance, that drinking and driving or obesity or cyberbullying or police brutality are problems. Instead, think about smaller aspects of the problem, or think more personally in your lives. You’ll need to get approval from me on your topic before you begin. When you’ve settled on your topic, you can then begin your research. The essay will require 5 sources, according to the following guidelines:
All sources should be credible, reliable (see the library databases) and the materials on source evaluation. Here are the requirements:
1 background or reference source (Credo, Encyclopedia Britannica, etc.)
1 data source (one source that offers us a statistic or other data on the topic)
1 source that explains a “cause” or “origin” of the issue
2 sources that you can use as potential solutions.
