A news release template with explanations for all the elements begins on pg. 34 of your textbook.
For this assignment, you will write about a newsworthy event or happening for the organization that you have selected. This is an actual news story and should be written as one, providing all the necessary information.
Your release should be no longer than two pages (double-spaced)
This is your opportunity to really think like a PR professional. You must decide what the most important elements are to communicate in this news release. The event/happening that you are promoting may be newsworthy, but in order for the journalist to write MORE about your organization than just about the event, you must present the most important, attention-getting, relevant facts about your organization to the journalist in an inverted pyramid, concise, clear and interesting way.
You may not directly input any materials already created by the organization, aside from direct quotes (and even the, you may have a direct source for an interview yourself). Research is one thing; cutting and pasting wording the organization already uses is another. You must have at least one direct quote in your press release.
Aside from the formatting of the release, misusing AP style, or citing incorrect organization facts, there is really no wrong way to write a news release. However, if you want to write an effective news release that will garner your organization significant media coverage, you will write the release thoughtfully and according to the textbook’s guidelines. Finally, sometimes the best way to understand the news value of information, as well as how it should flow in a release, is to imagine that you are reading the headline, lead and subsequent paragraphs in a newspaper article. How far will you read in the article the way you have written it?
Additional requirements
You should plan to disseminate this news release to a specific journalist. Write a separate paragraph detailing who the journalist/outlet is and detailing your specific reason(s) for choosing that journalist/outlet. This paragraph is NOT part of the news release. It should be a separate document.
You should have a clear understanding of who your public is for this particular news event. Write one separate paragraph detailing who you see as the target public, including relevant demographic and psychographic. This paragraph is NOT part of the news release. It should be on the document with your journalist/outlet paragraph.
