Option 1: Reflecting on the Job of a Mental Health Counselor using WLJA
We will not have time to do a WLJA in class, but this option is inspired by the idea of WLJA. It gives you an opportunity to critically reflect on a job – hopefully one that’s relevant to your intended career path. Use existing information (e.g., O*Net, information from a relevant professional society, etc.) to learn about a job that peaks your interest as a potential future job. You will need to talk to at least one subject matter expert about the job. Describe the aspects of the job in relation to the content of WLJA. To the best of your ability and being as resourceful as possible, describe the job in relation to the components typically reported in WLJA. What tasks and duties are performed and how do they relate to conflict and enrichment? How does the job seem to measure up regarding the different aspects of WLJA (see the six aspects of the WLJA questionnaire). Are there other work-family-related issues to consider about this job? Why are you interested in this job? How has reflecting on the work performed in relation to the work- family interface impacted your perception of the job? Besides work-life issues, are there other reasons this job appeals to you.
