The scientific method is the process by which scientists, collectively and over time, endeavor to construct an accurate (that is, reliable, consistent, and non-arbitrary) representation of the world.
Recognizing that personal and cultural beliefs influence both our perceptions and our interpretations of natural phenomena, we aim through the use of standard procedures and criteria to minimize those influences when developing a theory. In summary, the scientific method attempts to minimize the influence of bias or prejudice in the experimenter when testing a hypothesis or a theory.
After watching the video, notice that the plate tectonic theory started with the initial curiosity of Alfred Wegener, a meteorologist, astronomer, and Arctic adventurer who used his observations and multiple lines of evidence to support his idea that Earth’s continents had, over time, moved. Wegener’s work, along with other scientists are good examples of the scientific method in action. This video will provide some background into the process of transforming one person’s initial questions, observations, and hypotheses into a scientific theory. As you view the video, consider the challenges scientists can face as they present new ideas, and also the importance and value of continuing to ask “why?”
For this assignment, read the information provided, watch the video, and read about the scientific method in your class textbook, then answer the following questions. 2. List the steps of the scientific method (5 points)
3. Based on the information provided, discuss the main reason why the scientific method is important in science (5 points)
4. Watch the video and read all other information provided for the assignment, then use the evidence provided to identify and discuss the various steps of the scientific method used in the study of plate tectonics. Each step must be clearly identified and discussed. At least 4 steps should be discussed (8 points)
Please use the same number system to provide your response (questions 1 – 4). Please do not write your response in a paragraph, I must be able to locate a response to each of the questions asked
