1. Based on the readings and PowerPoint, what does use of self mean to you in your current role as a social work intern? Share an example of how you incorporated the use of self with a client, colleague, or supervisor at your internship, and share how your use of self-facilitated engagement.
The use of self is a term that is not entirely defined. According to the Exploring Use of Self: Moving Beyond Definitional Challenges, “Deal’s (1997) definition of professional self includes self-awareness, critical thinking, disciplined use of self, and self-organization (the latter of which is based on a construct of Winnicott’s relating to the personal self). Deal draws the first three elements from social work literature; the fourth one “has been theoretically linked to strengths and deficits within the student’s self which can influence professional development and performance” (Hanna, 1990, cited in Deal, 1997, p. 6) Based on this information the use of self in my current role as a social work intern means that I am focusing on my strengths that I have brought with me to my internship. One example of using my strengths is that I am a person that will work hard to figure out a solution to an issue, when I first began my internship, the direction was lacking, but I was able to figure it out and gather information from research to figure out what I need to do. I also like to think one of my strengths is being resourceful, I believe I have been resourceful as I have navigated my way through the different locations to find the one that works best for me and will be the most beneficial.
2. Based on the videos regarding self-disclosure, answer the following questions:
The methods and skills I have observed in the first two videos demonstrated effective self-disclosure by the social worker expressing her situation without turning the attention to herself, it was more so reaffirming the client that she is not alone in this situation. It appeared like she was comforting rather than taking the attention. In the PowerPoint, Use of Self, states, “Think about the purpose and determine what is appropriate for each client- remember what is beneficial for one client could be disruptive or even harmful to another client. Use of self helps mitigate the inherent power differential that exists between you and the client” This supports that using self-disclosure can be helpful in situations with clients to help them feel more at ease and not experience a difference of power between the client and social worker. In “The Art of Self Disclosure” talks about a woman who started to become emotional as she was listening to her client’s individual story because it reminded her of her son’s experience with his youth pastor. This is an example of inappropriate skills because she was becoming emotional in front of her client. This is something that should not happen as it can make the client feel uncomfortable.
