The discussion about food cannot be avoided because everyone must eat. The food choices that an individual makes are rooted in their up bringing and according to Maillot and Darmon (2020), food can keep a person healthy and reduce the chances of chronic disease. Unfortunately, not all patients have access to good nutrition. The nurse’s patient might be from an emerging population which can present nutritional challenges for the nurse. An example of an emerging population is the LGBTQ+ (Falkner, 2018). According to Linsenmeyer and Rahman (2018), eating disorders and the use of laxatives or vomiting is higher with transgender college students than their cisgender counterparts. Patients with eating disorders have higher mortality rates and death is primarily by suicide or heart failure (Claydon & Zullig, 2020). On the other hand, nutritional excess results in poor patient outcomes as well. Obesity puts the patient at risk for diabetes or hypertension. The government has programs set up for these communities to help get nutritious food and health care to them (Falkner, 2018).
