officers gauge the seriousness of an offence by assessing the immediate
consequences of the offense as opposed to the legal status linked to the
offense. The style is characterized by more discretion. A situation in which watchman
style of policing would be used is in blue-collar communities, small towns and
rural areas. The organizational and political culture of the agency based on
the watchman style is one that focuses on maintaining peace in the community
and is lenient in execution of practices.
Legalistic style of
policing is based on strict enforcement of the law and, as such, it is linked
to high numbers of arrests. Most aspects are resolved formally. A good example
in which the legalistic style of policing would be used in the career field is in
its utilization in big cities that are characterized by well-organized
governments and ethnically diverse populations. The organizational and
political culture of the agency based on the legalistic style is one that is relatively
formal and with more contact between police officers and the public. It is
common in highway patrol and state police agencies (Zhao & Hassell, 2005).
Service style of
policing does not differentiate order maintenance and law enforcement functions
but rather prioritizes all requests for assistance. Arrests are not likely to
be made, unless when it is utterly necessary. The style aims at meeting the community’s
needs. Service style of policing can best be used with social services and
other agencies that offer counseling for minor offenders and help community
groups in not only averting crimes but also resolving problems (Zhao &
Hassell, 2005). The organizational and political culture of the agency based on
the service style is one that tries to understand the root causes of community
problems and make use of alternative dispute resolution approaches.
