You will also need to include an annotated bibliography page with the text of your choosing. Additionally research is encouraged beyond what was initially completed for the annotated bibliography assignment Assignment: Use the text that you researched in the Annotated Bibliography assignment to complete the critical essay. For example: If you researched Ada Limón’s poem, “Dandelion Insomnia,” you will be writing a critical paper about “Dandelion Insomnia.” Based on the research you completed, pick one of the critical frameworks we have discussed in this course that would enable you to join the conversation with the writers of the researched articles. For example: After reviewing your research, you have noticed much of the discussion was about female-related discussions. Thus, feminism, would be the appropriate framework to develop your original interpretation, and join in conversation about others who have written about Limón’s writing. Content Requirements Isolate specific literary devices (i.e. plot, point of view, imagery, symbolism, setting etc.) that support your Marxist/Psychoanalytic/Feminist interpretation of the text. Use specific criteria from Marxist/Psychoanalytic/Feminist criticism. Your paper should incorporate examples from the research to support your Marxist/Psychoanalytic/Feminist interpretation of the text. Your final paper does not need to refer to every source in your bibliography but should contain enough references to demonstrate your familiarity with other readings of the text. Sample Outline You can organize the subtopics of your essay by literary devices, or you can organize your subtopics by specific criteria from the critical framework. Introduction Paragraph Hook Brief summary of the text Thesis should include: What text you are analyzing + the literary devices that contribute to the overall meaning according to Marxism, Psychoanalysis, OR Feminism + a unifying element (“so what?”) Subtopic (Literary Device #1/Criteria #1) Each subtopic should be multiple paragraphs. Avoid 1-page paragraphs. All body paragraphs should contain topic sentences (beginning of paragraph), evidence, analysis of the evidence, evaluation or how it contributes to meaning, and a transition sentence (leads readers into the next paragraph) Subtopic 2 (Literary Device #2/Criteria #2) Subtopic 3 (Literary Device #3/Criteria #3) Subtopic 4 (Literary Device #4/Criteria #4) Conclusion
