You should consider tracing its history and the various cover versions of this song. Pick three or four distinct versions. Perhaps consider finding the recording made by Alice Fletcher to use as one interesting example. In each major iteration/version, consider the song’s purpose and social context and what it allows us to understand about the particular moment in time. What have been the changes across each version?
