Overview:
In this activity you will consider your own usage of point of care technologies, i.e., technology the nurse uses on the unit or at the bedside, or in the community, to provide safe patient care. We will also discuss data collected and used as information and knowledge in community health.
Steps:
Investigate the course materials and then answer and discuss the questions below and post to Week 6 Discussion:
Describe two examples of how nursing informatics is used in your own community to improve health. You can identify a program or provider who is using information technology to gather and/or utilize data. Be specific about what is being done (i.e., describe, don’t just identify). [Tip: Think back to all the data you collected for your community health assessment in NURS 385. Who collected that data and why?].
Identify two ‘point of care’ applications that are used in your workplace (medication bar code scanning, CPOE, electronic handoff, teletracking – bed board, smart pumps, EHR applications, etc…) Answer the following questions related to these applications:
Identify a workaround that you or a coworker has used and analyze why this risk-taking behavior was chosen over a behavior that conforms to a safety culture.
Describe a current technology that you use in patient care that would benefit from human factors engineering concepts. What are some ways this technology should be improved?
