The economic burden of alcohol is front and center is our world of burdens in today’s society. First, alcohol imposes an extreme burden that taxes our healthcare system year after year. Binging on alcohol and high intensity alcohol consumption are at the front and center of many alcohol related emergencies since 2019 (Alcohol Facts and Statistics, n.d.) and emergency rooms across American have been flooded with alcohol related cases. Between 2006 – 2014 ER visits saw an uptick of 47% (Alcohol Facts and Statistics, n.d.).
Another burden worth mentioning is the death’s caused by alcohol. These deaths cause major pain, emotional stress, and financial hardships on families across America. NIH reports that an estimated 95,000 Americans die from an alcohol related incident, making it the 3rd leading cause of preventable deaths, jus behind tobacco and poor diets (Alcohol Facts and Statistics, n.d.).
Finally, Alcohol Use Disorder, or AUD is a serious condition that many are leaving untreated. The NIA reports that there is a serious problem with underage drinking leading to AUD. Children 12 and over are being exposed to alcohol and as a result of early exposure to alcohol, then suffering at an early age from AUD (Alcohol Facts and Statistics, n.d.). This condition left untreated can lead many families down a road of serious financial, medical, and emotional hardships.
