write about the design/theme of the chair in the picture.
chair— even though it’s made of metal, it’s light enough, you could say it’s based off of rationalism along with the way how Hagen designed his chairs in a way you can see the legs and the back.

Essay Assignment—one to two pages
Assignment:
Select a work of design (furniture, clothing, product, etc.) from your own home that you feel illustrates one or two themes we have discussed in class. Do not write about art objects (paintings, sculpture, etc.) and do not write about art movements or groups of designs—write about one specific design. Do not write about computers or cell phones. If you have any doubt about whether or not your selected design is appropriate for this essay, please ask me.
Each essay must include:
• a cover page with your name, the class name, the due date—this is a separate page
• a description of the design—one to two paragraphs
• a discussion of the design in terms of a theme we covered in class—for example: ornament, Romanticism, rationalism, modernism, post-modernism, etc.—one to two paragraphs
• a photograph of the object you are discussing, the photograph should be taken in your home, with you in the photograph—this is a separate page
In total: page one–cover page; pages two and three—your essay; page four—your photograph
Writing tips:
• Do not use the first person. This is not an opinion piece, soplease do not tell me whether or not you like the design—for this essay that is not relevant.
• You must talk about the design in terms of topics discussed in class, so be sure to pick your design carefully—pick onethat clearly reflects class topics.
• When you make claims about the design, such as “it illustrates Romanticism,” you must explain which specific aspects of the design support your claims.
• Be sure to spell check and be sure to use proper grammar—you will lose points for poor spelling and for bad grammar.
• For this essay you do not need an introductory paragraph, nor do you need to give the historical background of your object.
• Do not begin with the essay with grand, sweeping statements, such as, “Since the dawn of time people have always liked good design”—these types of statements are difficult to support and don’t get to the crux of this essay, which is to describe your object and to explain how it relates to some of the course’s themes.
