Assignment Sheet #8: Final Research Essay

ENG122-303

Professor Robert Kehler

Briefing: Write a 2500 word essay that takes a stand in a particular business ethics topic.

For this FINAL assignment, you will write a standard essay that argues and addresses a business ethics topic. This essay will be argumentative, meaning you must have a defensible thesis statement that a stranger could reasonably argue against. Perhaps the most important aspect of this essay is to choose a topic and perspective that is bold, courageous, and compelling. This essay is prone to platitudes for thesis statements; a thesis statement must be able to be argued against by a reasonable opponent. For example: arguing that lying is bad in business is too simple and OBVIOUS of a thesis statement because OF COURSE we know lying is bad.

Although common, unadventurous, and simplistic thesis statements can achieve passing grades, I truly encourage you to, again, be bold and nuanced in your argument. Remember: I do not grade based on morality; I grade based on the comprehensiveness, rhetorical strategy, and structure of your evidence. In my experiences, creating such a thesis statement comes only through meditation, by mulling over and arguing against ideas in your head until you have a eureka! moment.

Other requirements are as follows:

  • You may choose any business ethics topic and any perspective on said topic. Here’s a link to a Wikipedia list of business ethics topics that may be helpful in brainstorming ideas: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_ethics

  • Your essay must include a minimum of five (5) sources – three (3) of which must be from an academic or scholarly source.

o Union County College library provides access to many scholarly databases – these databases are where you will find your three (3) scholarly sources. I recommend Academic Search Premier, Business Source Elite, and Small Business Reference Center. Also, library books count as a scholarly source.

o Your essay must end with a bibliography page that correctly lists your included sources. Your bibliography must indicate your utilized citation style. I recommend APA , MLA, or Chicago-Turabian, but others are acceptable.

  • Generally, this essay should:

    1. refer to specific readings and authors

    1. address proposed topics and themes

    1. incorporate relevant direct and indirect quotations

  • This essay must be formatted accordingly:

    1. standard 12pt sized, Times New Roman font, along with 1 inch universal

margins.

  1. thesis-driven, argumentative writing

  1. paragraphs characterized by development, unity, and coherence

  1. mature and stylistically varied sentences

  1. grammatically correct and carefully edited and proofread

  1. heading information in upper left corner or first page (i.e. no title page) o a thoughtful and catchy title

o double-spaced

o numbered pages, beginning with page two (2)
