The State of New Jersey has become the model state for Juvenile detention reform. Drastic changes of committed juvenile paint a hopeful image of change in the future. Yet, looking at the statistics and efforts done in part by New Jersey to rehabilitate and/or prevent incarceration of the most vulnerable communities, leaves many with questions about funding and practical efforts donefor juveniles. Funding for such programs receive 10 percent of total funding. Juveniles who are committed and grouped have a higher chance of becoming continual offenders. Although New Jersey committed to becoming a staple in helping communities of color, the means of proving services to the most needed represents a problem. New Jersey spends a great amount of its budget funding detention centers. Most of its budget goes to personnel salary and safety, but little goes to the efforts of helping offenders become contributors and successful citizens of society. An increasein funding in restoration activities, partnerships and mentoring decreases the likelihood of incarceration. Addressing mental health, past trauma and possible triggers in youth. Mental health help during a critical developmental stage, can be the determining factor between death and success.
