Choose a Civil War era diary or journal from sources online. There are numerous options. Individuals of all types including soldiers, doctors, family members, slaves, and POW’s all wrote about their lives.
Rubric
1. Describe the journal and diary. Introduce the person and their circumstances. Use short quotes. Organize with paragraphs.
2. Add research. Look for more information to add context. For example, if the author of the diary is a doctor you could look for more information about what medical care was like during the war. You could also add research on POWs, black soldiers, religion during the war, slave narratives, or other topics via Wiki. American Yawp Chapter 14 Section 4 has info about women’s lives during the war and medical care.
3. Make it clear where you are getting the added information. Cite source in the text or write according too….
4. This is graded as a writing assignment. Make sure to take time to revise and edit so that it is well written and organized. Eliminate typos or awkward sentences.
