For this assignment, you will
create a compilation of the research sources you will be using for your final
research paper. First, you will find at least 3 peer-reviewed sources. This
step will likely take some time as you evaluate the sources and decide which
ones are most relevant to your topic and most interesting to you.
Then, you will write an annotation for each of your sources. Start with a complete
bibliographic citation (a “Works Cited” entry) in a style of your choosing
(APA, MLA, or Chicago—just be consistent). Then, in each of your annotation paragraphs, include all the following
three sections:
An establishment of credibility (of the author(s),
institution, publication, etc.)
Example: “Dr. Robertson,
who leads this research team, is a professor and researcher at Northwestern
University; he has published dozens of articles in this field and is
mentioned frequently in mainstream news articles about the latest
developments in AI.”
Example: Author and
reporter Jane Sduzku is a senior writer at The New Yorker, and she has published many articles about public health.
Example: The
journal Science has been publishing
articles since 1855 and it is rated as one of the top 5 most-cited
journals today.
Example: Psychology Today is not a peer-reviewed
source, but it is a well-respected name in publishing; its articles
always contain links to original research, citations, and transparent
fact-checking.
A summary of the author’s thesis and methods.
I should have a
sense of the overall content/point of the source (~1-2 sentences).
Then “zoom in” to explain
the aspects/sections/points/visuals that are most interesting or relevant
for your research. (In this “featured details” section, you can skip over
less interesting aspects as long as the initial overall summary is
accurate.)
Info about methods,
evidence, and/or analysis. For instance, what tools or methods did the
researcher use? What kinds of evidence/data does the author incorporate?
What type of analysis did the author use? Is there anything notable about
the way in which the author presents the data or interprets the evidence?
An explanation about how this source will
fit into your paper. What function will it serve in your essay? (For
example, will you use it as an example of a major cutting-edge research
paper that has gained notoriety in the past year? Or will you use it as a
counterargument/opposition/outlier? Or is it a non-peer-reviewed source
that helps you put the research into a larger context?)
