1. Visiting an adult novelty store in the Houston area (or close to your residence), and
2. Making interior and exterior observations (from the time you arrive to the time you depart), and
3. Asking the clerk for information about at least one (1) product in the store. (The assignment does not require you to purchase anything!)
The purpose of this assignment is to take you out of your comfort zone so that you are able to relate to and understand what a client is feeling when trying something new.
Students will individually write and submit a 2-3-page paper. Provide a detailed description of the internal/external store environment and your observations in your paper. Questions you should reflect on and respond to in your paper:
From a potential client’s perspective, what thoughts and feelings/emotions emerged during the field trip?
Would your client have seen evidence of diverse representation among the store patrons, products, and/or staff? If not, who was represented and why do you think that this is the case?
What was it like for you to approach store staff concerning a product? Provide a detailed description of what happened and your reaction (thoughts and feelings/emotions).
Would you recommend a client visit the store you visited?
Remember: Field trips will be completed in small groups of no fewer than two students for safety and peer support. Do Not complete this field trip solo.
