1. In chapter one there are many interesting topics discussed. One topic in particular stuck out to me and that is the Symbolic Interactionist perspective. Sociologists that subscribe to Symbolic Interactionist perspectives believe that symbols are instrumental in helping us derive meaning from social interactions. As an EMT Instructor I spend a lot of teaching time talking about observations that can be made about patients as well as the scene in which they are found. So, I find it interesting that there is a sociological theory that supports my teaching. In this perspective there is discussion about how the perception of the individuals in any given interaction determines how one then interprets the situation. In the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) setting I spend time discussing how perception is reality. If a patient or bystanders see something while an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is performing an assessment, they can interpret that interaction in different ways. Even the EMT themselves can interpret the interactions in different way. Symbolic Interactionists also discuss how symbols play a role in how we interpret situations. One of the biggest symbols that is seen when an EMT is performing an assessment is the hands-on physical examination. One example of this is when an EMT is assessing a carotid pulse in the neck. Depending on the hand positioning of the EMT someone can interpret it as appropriate or as if the person is strangling the patient. I think symbols in society are interesting because we all have different experiences that lead us to then interpret the symbols in different ways. In my opinion this shapes society in the sense that it is why we become friends with others or avoid them completely.2. Chapter three allowed me to grasp the importance of socialization worldwide and in human development. It was interesting to read that socialization is different from society to society. Along with the impact, social isolation has on child development. I was unaware that the most frequent form of child maltreatment is child neglect. Gender socialization is still occurring in today’s world. There are mainly instances where females are unable to play male sports and are looked down upon in video games. Also, it is untraditional for males to attend and enjoy hobbies that are traditionally for women such as sewing, crocheting, and even in my career of nursing. Rather than judging and believing gender roles play a part in hobbies, careers, and more, we should as a society be more accepting of those who enjoy what they want to pursue. We also should not teach our children what are masculine and feminine agents. Instead, we should allow them to seek out their own interest and encourage them to continue their goals as they please.
2. I found the topic of Social Imagination intriguing. Social imagination is ” The ability to see the relationship between individual experiences and the larger society ” (Kendall, 2021). This statement makes it clear that while you may grow up in a certain area where society is established in a certain way, people are also individuals who help shape and change the society as well. This also helps sociologist understand why certain people might act a certain way. The area in which someone resides can really shape their way of thinking in this world, which is why even within the same country, different areas have different ways of thinking and acting.
I believe that understanding this concept can really help society as a whole for a few reasons. Social imagination allows us understand that just because someone might not have the same way of thinking as yourself, that does not generally make that person wrong or a bad person. Society played a role in shaping them in those thoughts. It is up to everyone to be open minded and willing to make changes in their way of thinking, instead of becoming stuck in a one way track of thinking. Social imagination in a way helps understand that someone from New York City might have a completely different way of thinking than someone who lives in Eastern Europe due to many historical, sociological and personal differences.
In the text, it brings up the issue of suicide and it’s ties to society. I found it very interesting that suicide rates in the newly booming economy at the time of New Delhi was actually higher than that of Rural India due to added work anxiety and the breakdown of social bonds. This is why we can not always assume that more education and work opportunities means more happiness, as these are strongly related to both societal and personal beliefs,
